On 31 March 2022, the GR Corolla was launched, based on the larger E210 series Corolla compact hatchback and including several features originally developed for the GR Yaris. The car is powered by the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS turbocharged inline-three engine that powers the GR Yaris. The version of the engine in the GR Yaris produces up to 200 kW (268 hp; 272 PS), but the GR Corolla's version produces 221–224 kW (296–300 hp; 300–304 PS) and 370–400 lb-ft (502–542 N-m) of torque.

Unbox

After unpacking the product, take out all the parts bags and the car body. Since the product may be damaged during transportation by the logistics company, please check whether the parts are defective. The car body is more easily damaged by small parts such as A-pillars, brake calipers, and wheels. After confirming that the parts are intact, please check whether the etched sheet is bent or damaged, and whether the water sticker has stains. After confirming that all standard parts are normal, you can start the preparation work before production.

Car body treatment

First observe each part of the car shell, first use sandpaper to smooth it, and after confirming that there is no problem of lack of meat, use a scoring knife to deepen the carving. The roof and body of this product are relatively thin, so we use a 0.1mm diameter for carving, and a 0.15mm diameter scoring knife is used to deepen other carving lines. Although the carving lines of the car shell itself are relatively clear, we still need to deepen them manually again. This is to make it more three-dimensional after the production is completed. You can consider opaque lines and use natural shadows to show the texture of the carving lines.

When carving, you need to pay attention to the intensity from light to heavy. First, gently cut 2 knives along the carving lines, and then slowly apply pressure; in the arc position, you can use an elbow hook knife to deepen the carving lines. If there is no hook knife, when using a straight-blade scoring knife to carve deeply, do not carve out of bounds to avoid causing greater trouble, and pay attention to the angle of the knife head, and do not carve the curved scoring line into a straight line.

Element group

Use nozzle pliers to cut off the nozzle of the part little by little. Do not cut off the entire nozzle at one time to avoid missing meat. Assemble the polished parts according to the part number in the manual. Alphamodel's mold opening is very precise. Each part can be assembled directly, fit perfectly, and the nozzle position is reasonable.

In addition, the plain assembly can also let players know the arrangement order of some parts during the assembly process to avoid installing the wrong parts at the end. In the process of polishing the nozzle and assembling the components, be careful not to use too much force to avoid damage to some very small parts. Parts are easy to fall apart when clamped with tweezers, and parts that are not easy to clamp can be assembled with a dispensing pen. The adhesive used in the plain assembly can use blue butyl glue.

For the etching, I chose plate spraying. I first used masking tape to cover the parts that did not need to be painted, and then used 800 sandpaper to sand the parts that needed to be painted. Before painting, I used Gunshi SF287 water-based primer. When spraying, be careful not to spray too thinly. Use a spray gun to spray multiple layers, so that the paint particles adhere to the surface of the parts layer by layer. Wait until it dries before spraying the topcoat. I used Gunshi C28 (black iron color) for the brake disc holder, and C92 (semi-gloss black) for other parts. The brake disc part can be polished with a handheld electric motor and a round sponge sandpaper disc to simulate the friction marks between the brake pad and the brake disc after braking, thereby enhancing the texture.

Internal components

The rims were first sprayed with semi-gloss black (Gunshi C-92) and then with amino varnish to achieve a mirror finish.

The tread pattern of the tires is very clear, and because the Alphamodel mold is very clean, the tires do not need to be trimmed at all and can be put on directly.

After the brake discs are made, they can be cleaned with Gunshi WC-01 to make the vents on the discs black, simulating the texture of the brake calipers.

The brake calipers are painted glossy red to simulate the metal texture of the real car.

Body shell

The car body is sprayed with matte black (gunshi C-33), and after the paint dries, a layer of matte transparent protective paint (gunshi B514) is sprayed to protect the paint surface, and then the body is covered and placed on the windshield frame. The roof is sprayed with semi-gloss black (gunji C-92). Although it is also black, the different glossiness will produce visual differences under natural light, resulting in color difference.

Front wiper production

First, make the swing arm and bend it 90° according to the groove on the etched sheet. Be careful not to bend in the wrong direction, because the bending groove is thin. If you bend it too many times, it will break. The connection between the swing arm and the wiper is relatively small, so you can use tweezers to hold it and bend it.

Tail light cover

Due to the size of the 1/24 scale model cat kit and the limitations of the mold, the taillights cannot perfectly replicate all the details of the real car, so we need to make the black edge of the lampshade ourselves. You can use a marker to draw a black edge effect along the edge of the lampshade, and the red part can be painted with transparent red (Tamiya enamel paint). If there are any missing paint or uneven areas, you can use a fine cotton swab dipped in a little X20 to wipe it off.
